Frequently asked questions
Category B
01Explain how to check that the engine has the required oil level
With the vehicle standing on a level surface and the engine off, pull out the oil dipstick, wipe it clean, put it back into its tube and pull it out again. Check the oil mark on it: its upper edge must be between the minimum and maximum marks on the dipstick.
02Explain how to check that the brake fluid reservoir has the required fluid level
The reservoir has marks for the maximum and minimum permitted brake fluid levels. The brake fluid level must be between these marks.
03Explain how to check that the service brake works properly
Before starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times, then hold it steadily at one position (keep your foot still on the pedal) and start the engine. Starting the engine should make the pedal sink freely to a certain point (not all the way down), after which the pedal must not feel excessively soft. In addition, the vehicle must not pull to one side when braking while driving.
04Explain how to check that the parking brake works properly
With the vehicle standing on a level surface, the parking brake fully applied and the transmission disengaged from the engine, a person must not be able to move (roll) the vehicle by pushing it by hand.
05Explain where to find the recommended tyre pressure
This information is in the vehicle's service manual or on the plate the manufacturer has fixed to the vehicle body.
06Explain how to check that the tyres are in safe overall condition for driving
Inspect the tyres visually. They must match those specified for the vehicle's design and show no signs of under-inflation, tread separation, any other mechanical damage or wear beyond the permitted limit. If there is no wear indicator, a tread depth of less than 1.6 mm means the tyre is unfit for use.
07Explain how to check that the brake lights work properly
The brake lights (main and additional) must come on when the brake pedal is pressed and stay on steadily.
08Explain how to check that the power steering works properly
Once the engine is started, the force needed to turn the steering wheel must drop noticeably, and after the steered wheels are set straight ahead, the steering wheel must not turn by itself. The turning force must change smoothly across the whole steering range without requiring special effort, and the wheel must turn without jerks, vibration or noise.
09Explain how to check that the engine cooling system has the required coolant level
With the engine off and cold, the coolant level in the reservoir, which has marks for the maximum and minimum permitted levels, must be between these marks.
10Explain how to check that the turn signals work properly
Turn the ignition key to the appropriate position, switch on the left and right turn signals and confirm they are on with the matching indicator on the instrument panel. Then check visually (a third person may help) that they are on (flashing), and that every turn signal is intact, clean and working properly.
11Explain how to check that the lights and reflectors are in working order
Turn the ignition key to the appropriate position, switch on the side (position) lights and confirm they are on with the matching indicator on the instrument panel. Then check visually (a third person may help) that they are on, and that all side lights and reflectors are intact, clean and working properly. Dipped and main beam headlights are checked the same way. A wall or another object in front of the vehicle can also be used to check the headlights.
12Explain how to check that the hazard warning lights work
Switch on the hazard warning lights and confirm they are on with the matching indicator on the instrument panel. Then check visually (a third person may help) that they are on (the hazard lights must make all turn signals flash in sync), and that every turn signal is intact, clean and working properly.
13Explain how to check the washer fluid level in the reservoir
Turn the ignition key to the appropriate position and check the matching indicator on the instrument panel. If the vehicle has no such indicator, refer to the vehicle's operating manual.
14Explain how to check that the tyres have the recommended air pressure
Use the manufacturer's instructions and the appropriate equipment: the matching indicator on the instrument panel and/or a pressure gauge. Tyre pressure must be checked when the tyres are cold.
15Explain how to check that the tyres have enough tread depth
Use the manufacturer's instructions and a special tread gauge or ruler. Measure at the most worn part of the tread.
16Show where the engine coolant level is checked
The candidate must point out the engine cooling system reservoir in the exam vehicle.
17Show where the windscreen washer reservoir is
The candidate must point out the washer fluid reservoir in the exam vehicle.
18Show how to check that the horn works
The candidate must press the horn button to sound the horn, which must be steady and loud enough. If needed, the candidate must turn the exam vehicle's ignition key to the appropriate position.
19Show where the engine oil level is checked
The candidate must point out the engine oil dipstick handle in the exam vehicle.
20Show where the brake fluid reservoir is
The candidate must point out the brake fluid reservoir in the exam vehicle.
